Date:- 24 Apr 2018

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Monday that Sunday’s naxal encounter in Gadchiroli district in eastern Maharashtra—in which 16 Maoists were killed, was an intelligence-based operation.

Heaping praise on the anti-naxal unit of the Gadchroli police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Fadnavis said: “Yesterday’s operation was the biggest-ever naxal operation in Maharashtra. The security agencies killed 16 Maoists. Those killed comprised two naxal commandants. We decimated one full naxasl dhalam”

“Yesterday’s encounter was intelligence-based operation. It proves that our intelligence gathering has improved vastly in recent months. Two notable things are: there were no causalities from our side. Secondly, we have eliminated a large number of naxalities in the operation. It is really creditable,” the Chief Minister said.

Maharashtra’s Director General of Police Satish Mathur said that the forces had clamped down on the funding sources of the outlawed Left Wing extremists. “Starving the Maoists of funds has helped us tackle the naxal activities in a big way in Maharashtra. "We expect a number of Maoists to surrender the police the coming months," he said. Meanwhile, the Gadchiroli police said that of the 16 Maoists killed in Sunday’s encounter, five were women naxal operatives, while rest nine were men. “Of the 16 bodies of Maoists recovered yesterday, we have identified 11 of them. “ We are in the process of identifying the bodies of the remaining five Maoists,” he said.

Prominent Maoists among those killed in the encounter were identified as Shinu alias Shrikant alias Vijedhar Narasimhulu rao (51), a resident of Challagariga is a village in Warangal district of Telangana state and Sainath alias Dolesh Modi Atram (36), a resident of Gattepalli in Aheri taluka of Gadchiroli district. Both were Maoists’ south Gadchiroli Divisional Committee Members (DCMs).

The police had earlier announced cash rewards to to the tune of Rs 76 lakh for persons giving information about Sainath, Shinu and nine others whose had been recovered till Monday evening.

Sainath had suffered bullet injuries on right leg during an encounter with the police on Thursday. The Gadchiroli had in all registered 75 cases against Shinu. These included: murder, kidnapping, arson and assault.

Shinu, who had shifted his base from Andhra Pradesh to Gadchiroli, was appointed as the secretary of South Gadchiroli divisional committee last year.

He had in 82 cases –including murder, kidnapping, arson and assault – booked against him by the Gadchiroli police.
