MOVED BY ROUSING RECEPTION, KP APPEALS ALL MIGRANTS TO RETURN

Date:- 03 May 2019

After getting a rousing reception on his permanent return here following 29 years of migration, 74-year old Roshan Lal Mawa today appealed all migrant Pandits living in different parts of the country to return to their homes in Kashmir and restart their life here again.
Marwa and his family had to migrate in October 1990 after a gunman fired at him at his shop at Zainakadal in down town here. The injured Pandit said he received four bullets and was removed to hospital. “Despite the attack, I survived but took some time to recover during migration,” he said.
Inspite of the attack, Mawa could not forget his home in Kashmir and his friends here. He had established his business outside but his heart was in Valley. Later he kept on coming over here and spent some time. His son Dr Sandeep Mawa, a politician now, lives in Karan Nagar here. After lot of discussion with family, the Pandit decided to return permanently this time and reopen his shop at here.
Mawa has restarted his business in his newly constructed shop at Zainakadal in down town Srinagar. Prior to his migration Mawa used to sell dry fruits in his shop and he is planning to sell the dry fruits again. “But right now I am selling dates. Since the holy month of Ramzan is to begin after four days and dats are very important for breaking the day long fast during the holy month, I too want to restart my business in a sacred way by selling dates,” he said.
Mawa said he had not imagined that he would get so much love, affection and care here on him restarting his life back in Srinagar. “The decades of separation has not ended the traditional love between Pandits and Muslims here. I appeal to all other migrants to return to their homes and they will get lot of love and care from their Muslim brethren here,” he said.
Ever since Mawa reopened his shop, he has become the centre of attraction for the people. People including his old friends keep on visiting him to greet him and express their happiness on his return to the Valley. Local market committee members visited his shop and felicitated him and his son with a traditional turban.
“I was not expecting that I would get such a rousing welcome from locals here. Returning here was my last wish. I am thankful to God that my last wish is fulfilled now,” he said.
Abdul Rashid, a local, said that he was very happy seeing Mawa back. “Pandits were uprooted from their homes due to migration. This was very tragic. Return of Mawa will lead to a new beginning. This will restart an era of mutual brotherhood, trust and respect between Muslims and the Pandits, who had to leave their homes. They all must return. Kashmir belongs to them as much as it belongs to us,” he said.
Mawa said that his family first shifted to Jammu and then to Delhi. “I was doing good business there. On a single day, I would earn 10 times if I stay in Delhi. But I preferred Kashmir because I wanted to resettle in the Valley again.”
“I spent three decades in Delhi, but the love and affection I get in Kashmir is totally different,” he says
