The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe into the suicide attack on a convoy of security forces in which more than 40 CRPF men were killed on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in Pulwama district last week.

A team of NIA led by its Director General YC Modi visited the spot on Wednesday even as it had already inspected the spot along with forensic experts on February 15. The visit, a day after the attack, had taken place along with the visit of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who visited Kashmir and reviewed the situation in the wake of the incident.

The police have already registered a case in this regard and started an investigation into the attack, which was carried out by 22-year-old Adil Ahmad Dar of Gundibugh in Pulwama district, who rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the CRPF convoy on February 14. The convoy, carrying over 2,500 CRPF men, was on its way from Jammu to Srinagar, days after the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu national highway due to poor weather conditions.

In all, 19 persons, including three relatives of the suicide bomber, have already been arrested by the police and are being questioned. Police sources said an FIR showing the involvement of Dar had also been registered, while his father would also be arrested as a part of the investigations.

The martyrdom of more than 40 CRPF men has led to tension following angry demonstrations against the perpetrators of the attack. There have been reports of harassment of students and businessmen from Kashmir staying in various parts of the country. On the external front, the Centre has conveyed its strong resentment to Pakistan for perpetrating the attack, even as Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has denied any involvement in the incident.
