Date:- 11 Apr 2018

Assam Police has got in touch with their Jammu & Kashmit counterparts after reports that a youth of the State has joined J&K based terror group Hizbul Mujahidin.

Assam police has started an investigation after photographs of Qumer Uz Zaman, a resident of Jamunamukh in Assam’s Hijai district, went viral on social media that claimed him to be a member of Hizbul Mujahidin. His family members also identified him in the photographs. He was seen holding a gun in the photograph.

“We have received an intelligence suggesting that one Qumer Uz Zaman has joined the J & K based terror group. We have got in touch with the police in the state seeking more details about him and his wherebouts,” said Assam’s Additional Director General of Police Pallab Bhattacharyya.

“It is difficult to confirm the reports at this moment. However, we have taken not of the intelligence reports at started the investigation,” Bhattacharyya said.

It may be mentioned here that hailing from Jamunamukh, Qumer had gone to USA for job several years back and stayed there for four years. He returned to Assam in 2006 but shifted his base to Jammu & Kashmir to start garment business.

“We have not been able to contact him since July last year. His mobile remained switched off since then. Following this, we have also lodged a missing complaints with the police,” said Qumer’s mother, Shahira Khatun today.

She expressed shock to learn that her son has joined terror outfit and said that the government should kill him if he has really joined a terror outfit. “I would not have any remorse over it if he has joined anti-national activities,” she said while sobbing.

If confirmed, this will be the first case of a State youth joining the J&K based terror outfit. Although Assam has a history of Jihadi terror groups operating in the State and the police had arrested several operatives of Bangladesh based terror outfit Jamat-ul Mujahidin, there is no report of anyone joining the Hizbul Mujahidin so far.
