Normalcy Returns To Kashmir

Date:- 06 Apr 2018

A semblance of normalcy returned in Kashmir Valley on Thursday after Sunday’s spree of killings in south Kashmir’s Shopian and Anantnag districts claiming 20 lives including 13 armed rebels, three military personnel and four civilians. Sporadic violence occurred at several places in Srinagar as students attempted to stage protests. The authorities had announced re-opening of educational institutions across the Valley barring strife-hit parts of south Kashmir.

Chief Minister Mehbooba traveled to Kangan in Ganderbal to meet the family of a 22-year youngster who was allegedly hit with a bullet fired by a policeman and died in hospital on Wednesday. An official spokesman said the Chief Minister assured the family members that the guilty found involved in excessive use of force in the incident would be brought to book.

Sources said that students clashed with police and paramilitaries in the premises of several colleges and universities. Police used tear smoke shells to disperse protesting students who chanted anti-government and pro-freedom slogans.

At Amar Singh College, the students clashed with security forces after they protested against the Shopian killings. They also set a security picket on fire. A group of girl students from Women’s college also staged protest in Lal Chowk area.

Meanwhile, Northern Army Commander Lt Gen D Anbu visited the Kashmir Valley to review the prevailing security situation in the wake of recent counterinsurgency operations.

Accompanied by XV Corps commander Lt Gen AK Bhatt, the Army Commander visited the hinterland formations in south Kashmir and was briefed by the commanders on ground as regards the operational preparedness.
