Seven of 10 chargesheeted in JNU case are Kashmiris

Seven Kashmiri students are among the 10 persons against whom the Delhi police on Monday submitted a chargesheet in the 2016 JNU case.

Among the seven named in the chargesheet, four are PhD scholars, currently pursuing research in their respective fields from universities like JNU, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Jamia Millia Islamia.

The case pertains to raising of “freedom for Kashmir” and “anti-India” slogans during an event on February 9, 2016, against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Apart from student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar and Syed Umar Khalid, the seven Kashmir students and scholars named in the chargesheet include Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain Gatttoo, Muneeb Hussain Gattoo, Umair Gul, Rayeea Rassol, Bashir Bhat and Basharat Ali.

In the chargesheet, the police have also named 36 students as suspects, including student leaders Shehla Rashid, also a Kashmiri, and Aprajita Raja.

However, the Kashmiris named in the chargesheet refused to comment on the issue. “Since the case is sub judice, I have been advised by my lawyers not to speak,” said a Kashmiri scholar when asked for his comment.

Meanwhile, the joint resistance leadership said they “strongly denounced” the sedition charges against the Kashmiri students

Muneeb Hussain Gattoo-AMU

Muneeb Hussain Gattoo is a doctoral student in the Department of Economics, Aligarh Muslim University, and is pursuing research on ‘Financial inclusion in Kashmir valley-Status and constraints’. He hails from south Kashmir.

 

Mujeeb Hussain Gattoo-JNU

He was pursuing an integrated PhD programme in education at the Zakir Hussain Centre for Education Studies (JNU) in 2016 when the controversy erupted. He also hails from south Kashmir

 

Basharat Ali-Jamia Millia

A student of ‘International Conflicts’, Basharat is currently pursuing PhD in International Studies from the MMAJ Academy of International Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He hails from Baramulla 

 

Umar Gul-Jamia Millia

He hails from Anantnag district. Having already submitted his thesis, he pursued his PhD at the Nelson Mandela Peace and Conflict Studies Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia. At present, he is an assistant professor at the Islamic University of Science and Technology, Department of International Relations, Awantipora.
