STF to check hoarding of essential commodities

As parts of efforts to stop hoarding, profiteering and black marketing across the Kashmir valley, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan on Monday directed all deputy commissioners (DCs) to create a special task force (STF) for regular inspection of stock and supply position of essential commodities.

The force will conduct inspections to ensure proper supply of rice, wheat, sugar, LPG, kerosene, petrol and diesel even as the Divisional Commissioner also directed strict action against violators as per the law. He also sought daily reports for further action.

Khan passed the directions while reviewing the functioning of the food, civil supplies and consumer affairs (FCS&CA) department.

Giving the details about the functioning of the department, the director informed the meeting that the department had covered 68.10 lakh consumers under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) in the Kashmir division, including Leh and Kargil districts. He said the monthly requirement of foodgrains (rice and wheat) was 3,51,652 quintal. He said the monthly allocation made by the department under the NFSA was 3,55,540 quintal of ration.

He said there was an adequate stock of foodgrains available in the Kashmir region. — TNS
